Pentathlon Nationals 30th August 2010

Well done to John Allen for continuing the winning ways of R&REC at the Pentathlon Nationals over the years in taking Gold in the Mens Youth B event, including winning the fence with club fencer Hugo Fleming in a close 2nd overall. In the mens youth A event Alex Frazer came in 3rd with Josh Snow 4th. In the girls events Frankie Summers secured 2nd place with Georgina Summers 6th with a year left in the youth C age-group. Youth B saw Kate French record a creditable 4th with her older sister Kate taking 3rd in the Senior Ladies event.

Another great set of results for those who train at the club.

7th August 2010 - Summer details

The season is over and there is now a break from competition until September when everything re-starts

Club will run through the summer apart from 24th and 31st August when the hall is not available due to the floor being re-surfaced.

There are summer training days being held from 25th to 27th August at St Bedes School in Redhill. See the summer training days tab on the left from here for details.

Pentathlon Junior World Championships - 7th August 2010

A superb result for Kate French just missing out on an Individual medal coming 4th at thee championships, however winning gold in the team event so bringing a medal home. Well done Kate.

Cornwall LPJS Event 31st July 2010

Well done to James Russell on winning the Under 11 boys event down in Truro. In what seemed like a Plymouth club event from the number of their entries James fought though to the semi final which he won 10-0 before a closer final which he was losing 4-7 before a change of tactics took him to a 10-8 victory. Great result.

Senior National Fencing Championships 24th July 2010

On a weekend that did not go so well for our older contingent with Chris Howser getting our highest result with 14th, some of the youngsters performed well above their rankings with James Frewin who was a Cadet (Under 17) this year taking second seed after round 1 and finishing in 18th and Tom Edwards also a Cadet beating Neale Tannock in the last 64 to get a very impressive 32nd place. Other to 32 places went to Matt Dean 28th and Sophie Sinclair-Jones 20th in the womens event.

In the team event the younger team outshone the coaches team coming 5th out of 21 teams with the coaches team only getting 10th place. Well done to James Frewin, Tom Edwards and Paul Sanchez-Letham on that great result.

National Tetrathlon Championships 24th July 2010

Congratulations to Jenny Cusselle on becoming British Senior Champion for the first time. Another win went to club fencer Saffron Salih in the Youth C girls. Other results include Jacob Stapleton 4th in the Senior Mens event, John Allen 2nd and Joseph Choong 3rd & Tom Lees 4th in Youth B boys along with Franki Summers 3rd in Youth C Girls. Well done to those mentioned and all the other club fencers who competed at the event.

Norfolk Open 18th July 2010

Congratulations to Sophie St.Clair-Jones in winning the Ladies event with Natasha Lewis-Oliver back in form with a strong 3rd place showing with Tara Crank a very respectable 12th place. In the mens event James Frewin takes a great 3rd place with Matt Dean 5th.

Cambridge Open Air Open 11th July 2010

Redhill and Reigate fencers take both the mens and Ladies events with Tom Edwards winning the mens out of a field of 49 and Jenny Cusselle winning the ladies event including an impressive win over British ranked no 26 fencer, Eryn Spinlove, 12-10 in the Semi-Finals. This is another great step forward for both of these young fencers and shows how many of our young fencers from a couple of years ago who showed great potential are very much producing the goods now.

Bill Hoskyns Epee - 3rd July 2010

Congratulations to Garath Thomas on taking yet another Open title this season and to Taran Nicholls on another solid performance to take 3rd. Note also of 14 year old Harrison Nichols who in his first season of doing Open events secured a great 38th place out of a strong field of 81 beating many much more experienced fencers on the way.

England Youth Championships 19th June 2010

With R&REC fencers winning almost 30% of available medals available for Epee at the championships is a pretty amazing performance. Top honours goto Chris Rimmer who won the Under 15 Boys event after a 15-5 demolition of Matthew Duggen, the match that was finished in the first 3 minute period is viewable on YouTube at

The other medallists (all Bronze) were Luke Jones in the U11 Boys, Zoe Lowry in U13 Girls, Charlotte Wardle and Clara Hutter in U15 Girls and Harry Peck and William Grealey in U15 Boys.

Well done again to everyone who took part and tried there upmost to get great results. The number of medallists at events throghout the year for club fencers is due to the huge depth of talent that we posess and everyone involved helps with this.

Bexley Open 5th June 2010

Congarulations to Jenny Cusselle in winning the event on her come back from injury, beating Pinaar Orge in the final of the women's event this is a great way to re-start her fencing. In the mens event Taran Nichols finished 2nd losing in a close fight to Dudley Tredger, losing semi finalists in the mens event were Alp Orge and Jason Scrimshaw who also fence at R&REC. Nice days fencing and some solid results for club fencers.

British Youth Championship Finals 1st to 3rd May 2010

Great results for yet another year for R&REC fencers. Congratulations especially to Harrison Nichols in retaining his Under 14 boys title, Frankie Summers 2nd in U14 Girls and James Frewin and Tom Edwards taking bronze in U18 boys. Other results include Last 8s for Adam Whitelaw, Danial McGlade, Hugo Harris and Charlotte Wardle in their events and who also gain Byes to next years finals. Top 16s to Jonny Farmer, Harry Peck, Katy Griffin, Zoe Lowry, Clara Hutter and Ellie Irwin. As an extra bonus Harry Peck secured a top 8 in the U14 boys foil as well.

European Cadet Championships - 3rd March 2010

Though hampered by an injury to his ankle he got at the SE Regional qualifiers, James managed to beat the 2nd seed in the last 64 to gain a creditable last 32. Well done in even making it compete, let alone secure a solid result.

SE Regional AgeGroup Qualifiers

Well done to club fencers Tara Crank (U18 Girls), Freya Petty (U16 Girls), Katy Griffin (U14 Girls) , James Frewin (U18 Boys) and Harrison Nichols (U14 Boys) on winning 5 out of the 8 titles on offer at this event. Also congatulations to the too numerous to mention club fencers who have qualified with their result for the British Youth Championships which are being held in May in Sheffield.

Elite Epee Junior Series Event 3 - 20th February 2010

Well done to club fencers Luke Jones, William Grealy and Ellie Irwin on winning their catagories at Elite Epee Event 3. As always there were some really close matches and great excitement.

With all 3 events having taken place we have now totted up the points race and 29 out of the 48 Grand final qualifiers are either R&REC club fencers or fence at our local schools with club coaches. Well done to all the qualifiers and for those that have not made it this year, I look forward to seeing you back to try again next year.

Gareth Thomas Qualifies for Junior World Championships

Congratulations to Gareth Thomas on his selection to the World Junior (Under 20) Championships as part of the GB team. This event is being held in Azerbaijan from 2nd to 10th April. Good luck.

Slough Open 7th February 2010

Great result for Matthew Dean with a great 7th place out of an entry of 132 at this tough event which should propel him into about 33rd in the British Senior rankings. Also a good introduction to Senior opens for 13 year old Harrison Nichols placing 80th. It was a first taste of Open competitions for Clara Hutter who also made it through a round of DE to place 56th out of 90. Well done to all who took part.

Essex Open - 24th January 2010

8th place for Chris Howser helps solidify his place in the GB top 20 for the rest of the season. Garath Thomas secures a solid 13th with his sister Rebecca 14th in the Ladies event. Well done to Ellie Irwin who managed to get through the first round in her first ever Open event, this is not often achieved for such a young fencer.

Cambridge Open / Dinant Cadet in Belgium 16th January 2010

Congratulations to Gareth Thomas in winning in Cambridge, another boost to his Senior Ranking, and a feat not often done, Tom Edwards wins abroad at the Dinant Cadet event in Belgium and gets a nmention on the BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/fencing/8472209.stm. Well done.

Senior South East Regional Championships 3rd January 2010

With the first event in the new year R&REC's Tom Edwards wins the SE regional championships from a field of 28. This is a great result especially as Tom is still a Cadet and a real breakthrough at Senior level. Other placings go to Chris Rimmer 10th, Jamie Stuart 15th and Josh Stuart 18th again all superb results for fencers of 15 or younger. In the Ladies event Tara Crank secures 5th place from a field of 10.

Elite Epee Junior Series 2 - 12th December 2009

Club winners in Under11 Boys, Luke Jones, Under 13 Boys, Adam Whitelaw and Under 16 Boys, Chris Rimmer to dominate the Boys events. Clara Hutter who also fences at the club won the U16 Girls event with Tia Simms-Lymn (Plymouth) and Sara Sanchez-Lethem (Brixton) winning the Under 11s and Under 13 Girls events. A raft of other great performances from club/local school fencers with many winning their first DE fights at this level. Well done to all those fencing.

A great deal of thanks has to also go to the referees Rebecca, Chiara, John, Rory, James A, James F, Tom, Tim and Taz who I worked extremely hard and would like to say we really appreciated your efforts. Having so many good referees really makes the difference between a so-so and really good event. Thanks to Suzi who was assessing the referees for reffereeing qualifications and Kate, Shirly, Allan and Julian for their effortsl, the set up team that came in the morning to help get the hall ready and finally to Bryan Lewis, who without his help within the school I doubt the Elite Epee Series would have been able to expand to the size it is at and is instramental in so many areas for the event.

Another great event for fencers fencing at R&REC with winners Chris Rimmer (U16 Boys), Charlotte Wardle (U16 Girls), Tom Edwards (U18 Boys), Tara Crank (U18 Girls), Emily Elstub (U10 Girls), Stephanie Elstub (U12 Girls), Harrison Nichols (U14 Boys), Katy Griffin (U14 Girls) taking 8 out of the 10 titles on offer. With no entries in one of the other events(U10 Boys) and the winner of the other, Andrew Hughes (U12 Boys) possibly starting to come to R&REC shortly, it can only be deemed as a very good day for the fencers at the club. Miller-Hallett / Milner-Barry Cup 28th November 2009

Miller-Hallett - Another top result for Gareth Thomas securing 7th place as well as a great performance by Lloyd Jefferson in 10th.

Milner-Barry - Corinna Lawrence who we do not see very often took the title to re-take her Senior British Number 1 ranking with Sophie Sinclair-Jones 13th with a solid performance.

Sealions Pentathlon - 7th November 2009

Well done to all the winners of their events with R&REC fencers taking many of the titles. The most dominating fencing performance came from Georgina Summers winning the combined Boys and Girls Youth D & E with 26 victories with only 4 defeats. World Senior Championships - Turkey 5th October 2009

R&REC's Corinna Lawrence was the only British ladies epeeist to make it through the first day, however lost out in the L64 match against her opponent from China. First senior World Championships and the experience gained will be very beneficial for the future for her. Well done.

British Under 20 Championships - 4th October 2009

James Frewin follows up his win in the cadets with a quarter-final showing in the Under 20s. An unfortunate draw caused him to meet clubmate Garath Thomas in the last 16 which James managed to win to finish 8th. Other solid results for Natasha Lewis-Oliver and Sophie Sinclair-Jones reaching the Last 16 in the girls event and lloyd Jefferson joining Gareth in the mens top 16.

British Cadet Championships - 3rd October 2009

Congratulations to James Frewin who became the British Under 17 (Cadet) champion up at the Engliah Insitute of Sport, Sheffield. Fencing brilliantly he beat pre-event favorite Philip Marsh 15-14 in a well controlled final, winning with a double to secure the title. A well deserved win, well done. Great results for many of our younger fencers which bode well for the next year or two.

British Pentathlon Championships 29th/30th August

Amazing results for Local pentathletes, pretty much all who train for their fencing at the club on a regular basisYouth A Girls: Kate French winner, Youth B Girls: Annie French and Lauren Mooney 2nd and 4th place respectively, Youth C Girls: Francesca Summers winner, Youth D Girls: Georgina Summers winner, Youth A Boys: Ollie Robinson 5th place, Youth B Boys: Sam Curry winner and Jacob Stapleton, John Allen and Tom Lees 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively, Youth C Boys: Hugo Fleming winner and Joseph Choong 5th place, Youth D Boys: Jamie Butt 2nd, Henry Choong 3rd and William Marston 6th.

The strength of their fencing was shown with club fencers winning the fence event or coming runner up in every age catagory. Winners were Girls Youth A - Kate French (15 wins, 5 losses), Girls Youth C - Francesca Summers (26 wins, 3 losses), Girls Youth D - Goergina Summers (17wins, 4 losses), Boys Youth B - Sam Currey (18 wins, 7 losses). In the catagories not won by club fencers in second place were Girls Youth B - Lauren Mooney (16 wins, 10 loses), Boys Youth A - Josh Snow (21 wins, 4 losses), Boys Youth C - Hugo Fleming (23 wins, 6 loses), Youth D Boys - Henry Choong (15 wins, 6 loses).

All in all a pretty amazing performance from everyone.

British Senior Championships 25th/26th July 2009

Another great National Championships showed fencers peaking for the showcase event of the year with Corrinna Lawrence winning the Ladies title for the first time after narrowly missing out in 2008, other results included Rebecca Thomas 19th, Sophie Sinclair-Jones 25th and Natasha Lewis-Oliver 61st. The Men's event however showed the depth of the club with Chris Howser on his comeback trail for the Commonwealth team attempt again, with only a couple of weeks training, securing a bronze medal, Taran Nicholls securing a breakthrough 7th place which will push him up into the top 20 of the senior rankings for the first time, Tim Buzwell 21st and Matthew Dean 25th making 4 out of the top 32 from the club. With Gareth Thomas 37th, Jason Scrimshaw 44th, Lloyd Jefferson 46th, Greg Sinclair-Jones 56th, James Frewin 58th and Aaron Gardner 62nd that made 10 out of the top 64 who fence at the club.

The team event on day 2 saw the Ladies team reaching a solid 6th place out of 14 in a slightly weakened team with Sophie Sinclair-Jones not available due to injury prevention, Rebecca Thomas off on holiday and Corinna fencing with her sister. The mens team started well with 3 comfortable wins over Stockport, Team Newcastle and Haverstock' Haverstrop teams in the first round securing 1st seeds into the last 16 knock-out stage. Their clash with Haverstock 'Fighting Cocks' resulted in another clear victory taking the team into the quarter-finals where they met a very hyped up Combined Services team. After a close start the combined services team pulled away and won leaving the R&REC team in a solid 5th place.

Sophie Sinclair-Jones continued her solid comeback from injury with 3rd in the Ladies event with lloyd Jefferson top placed from the club in 12th in the mens. In the Under 13 Young Hoskyns event Harry Peck won the boys with Daniel McGlade in 6th.

Surrey 1-Hit Epee 28th June 2009

Aaron Gardner who occessionally graces the club with his presence took the title with an impressive 23 out of 28 wins, teenage sensation Tom Edwards took 2nd with 21 wins after a placing barrage with Josh Stuart 6th in what is probably his strongest showing to date.

England Youth Championship 27th June 2009

Harrison Nichols added the Under 13 England title to his British Under 14 and Elite Epee Series Grand Final win to solidly place himself at the top of the pecking order in the age-group. With Daniel McGlade winning Bronze and Hugo Harris as well at Leo Petty in the top 8 the club dominates this age-group. Francesca Summers fought through a foot injury to win silver in the Under 13 Girls with Stephanie Elstub and Benjimin Marrington-Reeve securing 3rd places in the two U11 classes. A very well run event and great results again for the clubs fencers.

Chichester Open - 24th May 2009

Congratulations to Sophie Sinclair-Jones on winning the Ladies Epee Event on her return from almost 12 months of injury. A great performance as there were some very strong fencers in the event including recent British Number 1 Jo Maynard.

The Mens event secured other great results for fencers who come to the club, with Jason Scrimshaw 5th and Taran Nichols 8th.

Great win for Harrison Nichols in the U13 Boys with clubmates, Leo Petty and Hugo Harris reaching the semi finals (=3rd), Harry Peck 7th & Daniel McGlade coming 8th. With 5 out of 8 in the Fianl 8 tableux and an entry of 39 this results shows the talent the club has at this age-group and they are going from strength to strength. In what was otherwise a dissapointing event for club fencers, Taran Nichols secures his best open result of his fencing career placing 6th in a very strong event which attracted a large group of International fencers from Italy, Germany & Holland to name just a few. This will give Taran a huge push up the senior national rankings.

Spring Pentathlon 28th March 2009

Top spot in the fence was shared 3 ways with sisters Francesca and Georgina Summers in equal top spot. In the overall events several were won by athletes who fence at club including Youth D Girls Georgina Summers, Youth C Girls Frankie Summers with Saffron Salih 2nd, Youth A Kate French and Youth B Boys Sam Curry.

England Trip to Poland 26th March

In what is an extremely tough event several club fencers attended as part of the England team. Top 16 spots were taken by Benjimen Marington-Reeve and Francesca Summers, however the star result came from Harrison Nichols finishing 3rd in an extremely strong event with 150 odd entries. Well done on this achievement.

Junior Commonwealth Championships - Malaysia 18th Feb 2009

Corinna Lawrence swept to Commonwealth Gold to complete a full set of International Medals for the season. With Gold at the Commonwealths, Silver at the Youth Olympics in Australia and Bronze at the European Juniors this has been a really successful International season for Corinna. Next stop is the World Youth Championsips in Belfast over the Easter Holidays.

Surrey Championships (Senior) 15th February 2009

Victory in the Individual went to club coach Taran Nichols winning his first Surrey County senior title defeating Stef Munn (who has also been fencing recently at the club) in the Final. A very young team of Taran (19), Tom Edwards (15) and Josh Stuart (14) also took the team title which is an amazing results considering Tom & Josh's lack of experience at senior level. Well done.

British Youth Championships - Stoke - 24th/25th January 2009.

Great success for club fencers with Harrison Nichols winning the Under 14 boys after an epic 15-14 overtime win against Sam Bradley. With Rebcca Thomas 2nd in the U18 Girls, James Frewin 3rd in U16 Boys and Clara Hutter 3rd in U14 Girls it was a great set of results for R&REC. Conratulations to the medal winners as well as everyone else from the club who made the trip and competed to their best on the day.

European Under 20 Champioships - Amsterdam 6th November 2008

Corinna Lawrence secures the best ever result at the junior European championships by a British woman with a brilliant Bronze medal. With two fights going to the final hit in the direct elimination she showed great composure to secure her first major (European/World) championships medal.

South East Section BYC Qualifier 2nd November 2008

Over 20 club and local school fencers have qualified for the British Youth Championships, event winners included Clara Hutter, Hugo Harris and Sophie Sinclair-Jones along with many others winning medals in their events.. Another great result and we look forward to contining that success into the finals in January.

Elite Epee Junior Series Event 1 - 25th October 2008

National Junior Championships 5th October 2008

Our most recent addition to the R&REC team, Corrinna Lawrence was runner-up in the Ladies Under 20 British Championship with Rebecca Thomas a stunning 5th (as she still have 4 years in the age-group). In the mens event Gareth Thomas placed 3rd, with Lloyd Jefferson 8th. R&REC were the only club with 2 fencers represented in both the Ladies and Mens quarter finals at this championship which shows how well the club is progressing. In the Cadet Event (Under 17) the previous day Rebecca came 12th in the Girls, with James Frewin 12th & Tom Edwards 40th in the Boys event.

Club fencer Jason Scrimshaw took the title in a field of 60 at the Portslade Leisure Centre.

Double success for club fencers with the Hugo Fleming winning the Youth C agegroup for boys and Francesca Summers taking the Youth D Girls title. Other results for club fencers include Tom Lees finishing 2nd behind Hugo in the Youth C event, Katy Rushmer 4th in the Youth D girls & Georgina Summers 9th in the same event. Josh Snow secured 2nd place in the Youth B boys. Our older youth pentathletes missed out on the event due to the Balkens international clashing with the event and some athletes opting for a weekend off prior to the World Junior Championships. UK School Games 30/08/2008

In probably the most prestigous junior event of the year Redhill & Reigate Epee Club fencers took Gold and Silver in the girls event. After making their way to the final Sophie Sinclair-Jones narrowly beat Rebecca Thomas 12-11 in extra time to secure the title. Well done, full report to come.

Senior British Championships 12/13-7/08

Yet again some great National results. Lloyd Jefferson, gave his ranking a great boost reaching the top 16, with Gareth Thomas 19th tese are great results for fencers still in their teens and will give them a great boost for their Under 20 ranking this coming season.

Club Coach Kate Gardner (Howser) fenced to her best ever Senior national result, coming 3rd in a very tough event. This result takes her back up to 3rd on the British National Rankings for Ladies Foil.

Gareth and Lloyd fenced in Team Young Guns with fellow Under 20 Chris Harding (I believe) and managed a very creditable 5th place out of 23 beating many much more experienced teams on the way. Great result guys. The clubs Ladies team's chances were severely damaged with an injury to Sophie Sinclair-Jones in the first round of the individual which resulted in a weakened team which came a solid 12th out of 17 teams.

England Youth Championships 5/7/08

Chris Rimmer and Hugo Fleming both secured great 3rd places in the Under 13 boys event with Ellie Irwin 3rd in the Under 13 Girls and Chiara McDermott also 3rd in the Under 15 event. British School Teams, National Tetrathlon, Surrey Championships & BYCs - Report 3-3-08

Local fencers have been gaining great success over the last few weekends at National and County Championships both for fencing and multi-discipline events.

On the weekend of 9th/10th February a number of fencers who train at Redhill & Reigate Epee Club (R&REC) competed at the British Tetrathon Championships. This event consists of disciplines of Fencing, Pistol Shooting, Swimming & Running and was held at Bath University.

Josh Snow and Hugo Fleming secured wins in the Boys Youth B (Under 16) and Boys Youth C (Under 14) events respectively. Runner-up spots went to Jack Legon (Youth A Boys, U18), Tom Lees (Boys Youth C), Nicola Lydall (Youth Women U20) and Annie French (Youth C Girls) with Kate French taking Bronze in the Youth A Girls event. These results were helped by great results in the fencing discipline.

Many of these fencers have represented Great Britain at International Junior and World Cup events and many are Olympic hopefuls for the London Games.

The following weekend fencers took part at the Senior Surrey Championships and R&REC again gained great results. Taran Nichols (who has recently been selected in the GBR Under 20 squad for World Cup events) reached the Final, losing to the much more experienced Tim Buzwell (Wimbledon) in a close match. With Matthew Dean 5th and Robert Allen 7th the club had three Under 20 fencers in the top 8 of this Senior County event.. In the team event Matthew Dean, Taran and Ben Measures took the title for the club.

Fenton Manor in Stoke-on-Trent was the venue for the British Youth Fencing Championships on 17th February. In the largest championships to date local fencers again performed admirably with many gaining great results.

Gareth Thomas (17), who has recently just been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Under 20 Championships in Italy in April, took the Under 18 title totally outclassing Daniel Wood (North West) in the final.

Other top 10 results for local fencers also included Harrison Nicholls (Oxted School & R&REC) 6th in the Under 12 Boys, Olga White (Reigate Priory) 9th in the Under 12 Girls, Chiara McDermott (R&REC) 3rd in Under 14 Girls, Clara Hutter (City of London Freeman’s School (Ashtead) & R&REC) 10th (U14 Girls), James Frewin (CLFS & R&REC) 10th in Under 16 Boys and Rebecca Thomas (R&REC) 5th in Under 16 Girls.

Last Sunday (2nd March) saw over 100 local fencers taking part in the British School Team Championships which were held at Whitgift School, South Croydon. Over 30 teams entered from local school in an event with over 130 team entries in total.

The Under 11 Girls event (Yrs 5 & 6) produced a clean sweep of podium place for local schools with City of London Freemans A team talking the title with Reigate Priory A runners-up and CLFS B and Holland Junior (nr Oxted) taking =3rd place. The Boys Under 11 saw Reigate Priory A team reach the final, losing eventually to Sussex House (London).

In the Under 13 events (yr 7 & 8) Reigate School gained superb results with Rebecca Davies, Allesandra Fioravanti, Rebecca Sloane & Alicia Wade taking the Girls title with City of London Freemans 2nd. In the Boys event Reigate’s A team fenced out of their skins beating Sussex House in the Semi Finals by a single hit before losing to Dulwich college in the Final. Oxted school secured 3rd place in their first year of having a team at the event.

Woldingham Girls School won their first National School Team medals at fencing coming 2nd place in the Under 15 Girls event, they were a single point away from taking the title however lost 45-44 to Bishop Challoner school in the crucial match. In the Boys event St Bedes A team took 3rd place in the Boys event losing to eventual winners Royal Grammer School Newcastle.

St Bedes and Caterham qualified for the Final in the Under 18 Girls event with St Bedes showing slightly more composure to take the title in a close match. Amy Silcock, who was part of the team who won last years U15 event, captained the team and was joined by Anna Masters and Alicia Davies to secure the title.

Finally Redhill & Reigate Epee Club fencers Rebecca Davies and Sophie Sinclair-Jones flew out to Rovigo in Italy to represent Great Britain in the European Cadet (Under 17) Fencing Championships at the weekend. With their event taking place on Thursday 6th March we hope that they have a great event and come back with results their training & effort deserve.

Elite Epee Event 3 report - 27th January 2008

Last weekend over 100 fencers from around the country descended on St Bedes school for the 3rd of the Elite Epee Series events and produced fencing of an extremely high standard. The series designed to encourage local fencers to take part in competitions has turned into probably the most competitive and popular Epee series in the country.

With 3 age-groups and separate boys & girls events running the event in a single day was a challenge, however with help from older fencers from the Redhill & Reigate Epee club (R&REC) the day ran smoothly and with very few problems. Many thanks must go to the staff and caretakers at St Bedes School for letting us use their facilities and for their help on the day which was very much appreciated.

In the Under 11 boys the semi-finals saw number 1 seed Cieron Tatlow (Holland Junior school, nr Oxted) beating Nicholas Hamilton (Escrime Acadamy, Brixton) and Alexandre Denuit (Escrime Acadamy) defeating Jonathan Bruce (Reigate Priory). The final was tough with Alexandre showing slightly more finesse to beat Cieron in a very close match.

In the Girls U11 Sara Sanchez-Letham (Brixton Fencing Club) won her 3rd successive Elite Epee Series event beating Emma Dulac (Escrime Acadamy) with the score 10-6. Losing out in the semi-finals were Bb Prendiville (Escrinme Acadamy) and Zoe Lowry (City of London Freemans School, Ashted).

In the biggest event of the day (32 fencers), Hugo Harris (KCS Wimbledon) took the Under 13 boys title beating Tommy Curran-Jones (Brixton) in the final. Equal 3rd were Sam Bradley (Espada, Bournmouth) and Ned Tidmarsh (Brixton).

Eastbourne fencer Angela Cutler won the Under 13 girls event beating Clara Hutter (CLFS & R&REC) in the final. Following hard fought semi-finals 3rd places went to Rebecca Mayle (Reading) and Charlotte Wardle (R&REC).

The top results came in the Under 16 boys and Girls Events for local fencers with James Frewin and Chiara McDermott (Redhill & Reigate Epee Club), who have both won all the series events to date, beating Matio Dworkin Active III (Essex) and Tessa Abbott (CLFS) respectively. Semi-Final losers Jack McGlade (KCS Wimbledon), Paul Sanchez-Lethan (Brixton), Catherine Leatherbarrow (Woldingham School) and Freya Petty (London Thames FC) had to settle for 3rd place finishes.

The next Series event will be the Final event in which only the top 10 fencers from each event will be invited to attend. This event is being held at Caterham school on 19th April to decide the overall series Champions and will be one of the toughest events on the years fencing calendar.

Autumn 2007 - to 4th Nov 2007

The club's fencers have continued their success both locally and on the national level over the last couple of months. At the Cadet and Junior National championships in October Sophie Sinclair Jones came 5th in the Girls Cadet Championships as well as 9th in the Juniors and Gareth Thomas was runner-up in the Boys Junior (U20) section a great results as he still has 2 more years in the age-group..

At the Woldingham Elite Epee Event (27th Oct) club fencers won 4 of the 6 events and had fencers taking the runner-up spot in the other 2. Winners were Cieron Tatlow (Under 11 Boys), Ellie Irwin (U13 Girls), James Frewin (U16 Boys) & Chiara McDermott (U16 Girls). Full results can be found at www.eliteepee.com

Elite Epee Series Event 1 Under 11 Boys Champion - Cieron Tatlow

The South East regional age-group championships again saw a good entry from the club as well as a great deal of success. Louisa Sparks became the Under 12 champion, with Abigale Lister 2nd and Marie Prichard and Olga White =3rd; all qualifying for the National finals. In the Under 12 boys, after a hard final Harrison Nichols took 2nd place behind KCS Wimbledons Hugo Harris. In the Under 14 Girls, Chiara McDermott took the title with Fraya Petty =3rd. The U14 boys saw Chris Rimmer take gold after a tight final match against KCS Wimbledon's Jack McGlade. The U16 Girls was won by Rebecca Thomas with Sophie Miles 3rd, the U16 boys James Frewin 2nd and Tom Edwards 3rd. The Under 18 boys was won by Rebecca's brother, Gareth with Robert Conrad-Allen 2nd with the U18 Girls won by Natasha Lewis-Oliver with Ellie Hudson and Grace Rowland =3rd. All in all a fairly impressive club perfoarmance with 24 of the 40 odd fencers qualifying for the National Championships in the Epee fencing at the club.

Surrey Youth Games 2007

Mole Valley won both the girls and boys events at the first fencing championships at the Surrey Youth Games. The girls team which consisted of Jesicaa Ventham, Charlotte Wardle and Juliet Arial, all who fence at R&REC, ran away with the tiltle without a loss, winning 45-26 in the final against the Tandridge Borough team.

The boys team of R&REC fencers James Thompson, Daniel Beech and James Frewin came back from a 7 hit deficit going into the last match with James Frewin drawing the match back up to 44-44 at the end of time. With James getting priority in the final minute he managed to hold out to at win on priority against the Reigate & Banstead team which consisted of Jack Fenton, Chris Rimmer and Tom Edwards who are also fencers at the club.

Easter 2007 Fencing Days

Chris will be running training days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the second week of Easter school holidays (10th to 12th April). Details and application form attached.

Surrey Novice & Intermediate Champs 25th March 2007

At all levels R&REC seem to be succeeding with a great set of results from Junior fencers, many fencing at their first senior event. Sophie Miles fenced out of her skin to pick up 2nd in the Novice (less than 3 years fencing) Ladies Epee in her first ever Senior Event, losing in the Final to Eileen Buist (mother of England Team member David) out of a field of 14; Sophie has another year in the Novice catagory and at only 13 years old, will be shooting for the title next year for sure. Matthew Amlot narrowly missed Gold losing 15-14 to Woking's Daniel Morse in the Mens Novice Epee, however in the Intermediate Event (for over 3 years fencing, but non county champions) held later in the day won through to become Surrey Intermediate Champion, at only 16 this is a great acheivment. In the Ladies Intermediate Event Katie Ford came 3rd following a 6th place in the Novice event to show great improvement over the day.

National School Teamd Championships - 4th March 2007

Local school once again excelled at the British School Team Championships, held at Upper Hayford (Nr Oxford) last weekend. With a total of 87 teams competing at the event in 4 age-groups the results were especially impressive.

Following a slow first round where they registered a defeat against Oakfield School (Fetcham), Reigate Priory went one better than last year’s runners-up spot to win Gold in the Under 11 Boys event with Joseph Meakin, Francis Waterton and Robert Scott in this year’s team. With Joseph and Francis having only started fencing in September, this was a surprise result, however fight by fight the whole team grew to a formidable squad beating the much more experienced Oakfield School in the Final by a near 20 point margin. Micklefield reached the Semi-Finals losing narrowly to Oakfield.

In the Under 11 Girls, City of London Freeman’s School (Ashtead) won through to repeat their Gold winning exploits of 2006, Ellie Irwin, Clara Hutter and Louisa Sparks who had a experience advantage over all the other teams won all 4 of their matches to take the title. A great result for Sandcross School (Reigate) saw them beating Holland School (nr Oxted) 45-44 to take 2nd with Holland 3rd. With all three Sandcross Girls, Vicky Collins, Bethany Wells and Megan Bailey being Year 5’s, they will still be in this age-group next year and are setting new standards for the future.

In the Semi-Finals of the Boys U13 event Reigate School ‘A’ were matched against St Bedes ‘A’; following a close encounter Reigate won through to face St Anne’s from Dunfermline who had defeated Reigate School ‘B’ in the other Semi. The Dunfermline team proved to strong in the Final, however will Reigate’s team consisting of all Yr 7s, Luke Puddy, Chris Rimmer and Josh Stuart have next year in the same age-group to go for the title.

Haybridge School from Stourbridge in Worcestershire won the Under 13 Girls event by a single point margin against City of London Freeman’s School. The Colf team of Jessica Ventham, Lauren Rofe and Juliet Ariel fenced magnificently but were finally defeated by Haybridge’s Amy Radford who recently placed 2nd at the British Under 14 Championships.

St Bede’s School won the Under 15 girls event with Amy Silcock, Frances Coles, Jennifer Peach and Katie Ford collecting the title on their first ever team event. The improvement this group has shown since starting fencing at the school in September is spectacular and with more experience even better things could happen in the future.

Well done to all the local schools at the event, the continued improvement of fencing at these schools is all down to the pupils who work so hard to learn and improve as well as the parents and schools who support the kids so wholeheartedly. With so many great local results the upcoming Surrey Youth Games (in June) where fencing is included for the first time should be a great event.

Press Report 17-18/Feb 2007- National Success for Local Fencing Talent

Redhill & Reigate Epee club are continuing to produce some of the best junior fencers in the country and showed again last weekend that after only 4 years of the club existing that they are undoubtedly the best producer of young Epee talent in the country. Fencers from the club are also top competitors in Pentathlon with fencing being one of their strongest disciplines.

Three overall title winners at the National Tetrathlon Champs (Fence, Pistol Shoot, Swim & Run) last weekend started the weekend well, with Jack Legon (Youth A Boys), James Myatt (Youth B Boys) and Kate French (Youth B Girls) taking their titles in great style. With other great results including Nicola Lydall 2nd (Junior Ladies) & Josh Snow 3rd (Y B Boys) the club has top ranked competitors in several categories. Solid performances in the fencing event by all the winners gave them the edge over their rivals and ensured clear leads over their opponents prior to the final run discipline.

On the same weekend at the British Youth Epee Champs, the club collected a haul of 3 silvers and 4 bronzes along with several other finalists (top 8 placings). Seven podium finishes was actually more than any other region as a whole and more than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. The South East topped the medals table with 10 medals, almost 1/3rd of those available including Gold for LTFC’s Victoria Mcauley who narrowly beat R&REC’s Sophie Sinclair-Jones in the Under 16 Girls Gold medal match on the final hit in extra time.

The club’s medalists were in the Under 12 Girls event, Ellie Irwin 2nd, Charlotte Wardle =3rd – Under 12 Boys, William Grealey 2nd, Hugo Fleming =3rd, Harrison Nichols =3rd, Under 16 Girls Sophie Sinclair-Jones 2nd & Rebecca Thomas =3rd. Other finallists included Clara Hutter, Lauren Rofe and Aaron Gardner. Who knows how many other finalists we could have had if the two events had not been organized for the same weekend.

With so many medalists at this event it was a shame that the club won no Epee titles to add to the National Cadet (under 17) Epee Championships won by Gareth Thomas back in October. It does give the club a clear target for next year’s event and we will have to work really hard to improve on this year’s results.

In addition to these successes; the previous weekend senior fencers at the club competed at the Surrey Championships. Club coach, Chris Howser won the Men’s title and Natasha Lewis-Oliver the Ladies which shows that the club is producing winners at all ages.

With many club fencers competing at the British School Team Championships next weekend the club has yet another chance to have many of its fencers competing at the highest levels.

Other finallists included Clara Hutter, Lauren Rofe and Aaron Gardner.

Well done to those mentioned above as well as everyone else who competed representing the club with great spirit and skill.

Woldingham Challenge Event - Girls Epee

Three of the four events won by club fencers (one one not won did not have any R&REC entries). Well done to victors Natasha Lewis-Oliver, Charlotte Wardle and Francesca Dobbe. Full results at www.eliteepee.com .

Welsh Open 11/12-11-06

Club coach Kate Gardner reached another semi final at a major open to place 3rd in the ladies foil. In the Ladies Epee Nicola Lydall secured her first quarter-final birth at a major Open with wins over British Number 13 Helen Holloway and British No 6 Katherine Fearis before losing narrowly to Libby Payne ranked number 16. With Nicola still being a Junior (Under 20) and only being ranked 58th currently in the Senior rankings this will probably jump her up into the top 30 next month. Well done to all our other fencers who got last 64s and 32s at the event.

SE Regional Epee Championships 12-11-06

Another set of geat results reinforces R&REC's status as the top Epee club in the SE of England with the clubs fencers winning four South-East titles at the weekend (no other club got more than one). This is dispite three of last years champions from the club having a event clash with the Welsh Open (qualifier for Cadet(under 17) and Junior (U20) world championships) and not being able to compete.

The titles were won by Charlotte Wardle (Girls U12), Jessica Ventham (Girls U14), Kate French (Girls U16) & Harrison Nichols (Boys U12), well done to you all.

Podium places were also secured by Lucie Ashdowne (=3rd U12 Girls), Clara Hutter (=3rd U12 Girls), Lauren Rofe (2nd U14 Girls), Dora Pitch Soden (=3rd U14 Girls), Grace Rowland (2nd U18 Girls), William Grealey (2nd U12 Boys), Harrison Standish (=3rd U12 Boys), James Frewin (2nd U14 Boys), Matthew Amlot (3rd U16 Boys).

National Cadet & Under 20 Championships 7/8-10-06

Gareth Thomas wins his first National title with a great win in the Cadet (Under 17) Epee; following a long day of fencing Gareth won the gold in the final against Wellington Swords, Chris Hay. Other great placings went to Lloyd Jefferson 3rd and Natasha Lewis-Oliver 3rd in the girls event. In the Under 20 event the following day, Gareth Thomas and Matthew Dean reached the Quarter-Finals to place 6th & 8th respectively with Lloyd Jefferson 9th & Conrad Cotton-Barratt 11th. Great results for all of them, especially as they still have at least one year left at these age-groups.

Manchester Cadet and Sussex Open 30-09-06

Fencers at the club at the Manchester Cadet (under 17) Tournament and the Sussex Open in Brighton. Gareth Thomas was the pick of our fencers in Manchester winning the event from a field of 50 with Conrad Cotton-Barrett having been beaten by Gareth in the Semi-final and placed 3rd. These results will boost both Gareth and Conrad’s chances of competing at the Cadet World Championships next year.

At the Sussex Open Matt Dean (17 years old) placed 10th out of 91 to score some well deserved Senior Ranking points and great credit goes to James Frewin (only 13), who on his first senior open event placed a very impressive 69th, while being half the size of pretty much any other competitor. In the Ladies event Sarah Langridge placed 6th; with Nicola Lydall 11th out of a field of 34 fencers, more great results.

With the British Junior (Under 20) and Cadet (under 17) Championships taking place this coming weekend we hope there will be more good news for next weeks paper.

Surrey Youth Championships 24-09-06
Fencers from Redhill & Reigate Epee club followed last years impressive haul of 6 Golds with an unbeleivable clean-sweep of 8 golds winning every Epee event on offer. Commonwealth Championships - Belfast Sept 2006
Kate Gardner secures Northern Irelands first medal of the championships with a hard fought Bronze, her first Commonwealth Individual medal. Chris Howser wins Silver with the England Mens Epee Event behind Canada.

Senior National Championships 07-06
With Chris Howser & Kate Allenby, both of the clubs National Champions from last year, as well as Sarah Langridge 3rd last year, not competing in the Individual Events it was left to the teams for the club to make waves. With weakened teams the club acheived a solid top 8 result in the mens event with Chris Howser, Neale Thomas and Bryan Lewis. A young ladies team (average age of 17) and junior mens team (ave 16) both narrowly failed to progress through the opening rounds after some close and high class matches.

Brixton LPJS Event

Eleanor Hudson wins Under 17 Girls event. Chris Rimmer (Sandcross) overcame a poor first round to battle his way to the Last 8, great result; with Luke Brunswick (Oakfield) and Luke Puddy (Sandcross) both making the top 16. Other results still to come.

IAPS Championships

Fencers from local schools gained great success last weekend. On this occasion the event was the IAPS (Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools) National Under 14 Championships with schools from around the country sending their best fencers to the event in Canterbury.

Fencers representing City of London Freemen’s School scored the major results with James Frewin winning the boys Epee event following a tight final which included fencers from Sussex House (London), Millfield, Lanesborough (Guildford) and Feltonfleet (Cobham) Schools out of a total field of 24 fencers.

In the Girls Epee CLFS had 3 pupils reaching the final 6 with Millfield Prep supplying the other 3 finalists. Jessica Ventham showed great fight and accuracy to dominate the final, winning matches against her team-mates Lauren Rofe and Tessa Abbott before demolishing the Millfield Girls to take the title in style. With Lauren 3rd and Tessa 4th CLFS has shown that it is clearly the top school for Epee at this age-group.

With fencers from Cottesmore (Pease Pottage), Hazlewood (Limpsfield) and Feltonfleet also fencing, the local area was well represented with Harrison Standish from Cottesmore and Christopher Marriott (Hazlewood) reaching the semi final with Hugo Fleming (Feltonfleet) reaching the final. Hugo’s result is especially impressive as he is only 10 years of age and has 3 more years in this age-group.

With James and Hugo as well as Jessica, Lauren and Tessa fencing at the Redhill & Reigate Epee Club the added opportunities to train are really showing.

British Under 12 Championships

Youth fencing took another major step forward with the running of the first ever British Championships for Under 12 Epee. The event, held on 14th May at the City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead, Surrey, attracted 120 entries making it probably the largest ever Epee event for this age-group. With the Under 12 age-group being absorbed into the BYCs next season this will be the only year a separate event will be run so this was a special occasion.

The facilities at the event were great with a spacious hall, viewing gallery, cordoned off viewing area in the hall and 8 metallic pistes. The event attracted fencers from all around the country; however the majority of the entrants came from the Surrey/South London area.

The boys event, with 84 fencers, started on 12 pistes and immediately the quality of the event was clear with close and skilful fencing taking place all around the hall.

The Brixton club showed their potential taking the top 2 seeds, Paul Sanchez-Letham & Jahmal Barnes, after the first round with Harrogate fencer Jordan Chang 3rd and Hugo Fleming of Redhill & Reigate Epee Club 4th. The knock out rounds saw a few surprises with Nicholas Ma Siy (Cottesmore School) knocking out Jordan Chang & Adam Foster knocking out top seed and Brixton club-mate Sanchez-Letham in the last 16. Matthew Duggan (Cressy) was the biggest surprise of the DE overcoming a poor first round (38th seed) to make the semi-final and join James Snowden (Lanesborough School), Tomas Curran Jones (Brixton) and Jahmal Barnes to fight for the medals. The semi-finals saw the two Brixton fencers triumph. This left a final in which the experience of Barnes showed with him pulling clear to take the title and become the first ever winner of the British Under 12 title and hold aloft the trophy donated and presented by Maggie Lloyd-Jones.

The girls event had a more modest, but still large, entry of 36 which was split into poules of 6. The first round saw Freya Petty (KCS), Amy Radford (West Midlands), Stephanie Collister & Ellie Irwin (City Of London Freemen’s) take the top 4 seeds respectively. The direct elimination matches were closely fought with many fights going to the line, however generally going to seeding early on, Rebecca Mayle (Reading) however improved on her mid table seeding to reach the semi-finals with Amy Radford, Stephanie Collister and Freya Petty. The semi-finals saw Radford and Mayle triumph to set up a Reading vs West Midlands final which saw Radford win the title in her final year in the age-group.

The event has helped identify huge potential for the future with many under 10 fencers competing and gaining good results including Olivia Saitch (St Johns School, Redhill) 15th in the girls event and Harrison Nichols (Holland Junior School, nr Oxted) 26th in the boys leading the under 10s. Maybe a National Under 10 event will be needed next season?

Thanks must go to the helpers and referees at the event with many local juniors spending a day helping out and supporting their future opposition. The event ran fairly smoothly with the event starting at a sensible 10.30 and finishing just after 6pm.

Sponsors Brewin Dolphin Securities and Lawson Loft Conversions are thanked for their support of the event, this lead to top 4 prizes of Epees, Masks, 800N plastrons and fencing bags; with 5th to 8th winning bodywires to add to their kit; as well as referees & helpers receiving cheques to cover their expenses. Leon Paul Equipment’s support was much appreciated with them supplying 6 metallic pistes, towers lights etc and running a stall. A mention is also needed for Graham Forster at Allstar/Uhlmann for their free loan of an additional 2 sectional pistes which meant that all DE fights took place on metallic pistes.

Finally I would like to thank David Hayward (Headmaster) and all the other school staff at City of London Freemen’s school for helping us hold a very successful event at their school. We hope that we will be able to run future events at the venue which is large and spacious with great facilities for fencers and spectators alike.

National School Team Championships 4th March 2006
Fencers from the club and schools coached by Chris Howser fenced for their schools and continued the clubs/Surrey's junior successes. Nathalie George, Georgina Wood and Jemima Dickinson suceeded in taking the Under 14 Girls title for Reigate Grammer School. City of London Freemans (Ashtead) won the Under 12 Girls with Oakfield (Fetcham), St Johns Year 6's (Redhill) 3rd and St John's Year 5s in 4th, all of these teams are coached by Chris. In the boys Under 12 Reigate Priory's, Micheal George, Daniel Sterry and Joshua Stuart fenced out of their skins narrowly losing to Sussex House (London) in the final. Bronze medals were won by Oakfield's, Tom Evans, Jack Atree and Rhys Newcombe (Fetcham) beating Cottesmore School on the final hit 45-44. With 13 teams in the Boys Under 12 event and 7 of the top 8 coached by Chris this is a great result and shows that local fencing can only get even better in the future once these youngsters get older.

National Age Group Championships 19th Feb 2006
A great set of results all round with James Frewin 3rd in the Under 14 Boys; Lloyd Jefferson 2nd in Under 16 Boys with Gareth Thomas 5th and Conrad Cotton-Barrett 8th;Aaron Gardner 7th in Under 18 Boys. In the Girls events Rebecca Thomas 3rd in Under 14 Girls with Natasha Lewis-Oliver 21st in the Under 16s following a week of serious illness. With many of the clubs strong fencers competing at the National Tet championships which clashed with this event (including last years National under 18 girls champion Nicola Lydall along with Surrey Champions Josh Snow & Jack Legon)), to get 6 fencers into the final 8 is great going from our junior fencers. Well done to all.

Ashton Leon Paul Series Event 19th Feb 2006
Hugo Fleming, who was too young to compete at the National Tet championships took Under 11 gold, for his first Leon Paul Series title, great going Hugo.

National Tetrathlon Championships - 19/20th Feb 2006
Jack Legon (Youth B) and Josh Snow (Youth C) win national titles with Nicola Lydall (Youth A) 4th, Charlotte Whitlock 7th, Kate French (Youth B) 3rd, Jenny Cuselle 6th, Jaime Binder (Youth C) 4th. All had great fences with Josh and Jack winning their fences and everyone else in the top 5 at that event. Well done to all.

Surrey Championships - 13th Feb 2006
Chris Howser wins Surrey Mens title for the third year running, Nicola Lydall and Rachel Measures = 3rd in Ladies. Tiger Swords wins mens team title with 2 regular R&R team members and a 3rd member who also occasionally comes to the club, with R&R A Team runners up on the final point after knocking out the R&REC Random team in semi final. Ladies team runner up to Guildford A who again had regular R&REC fencers within their team. More detailed report to follow in due course.

Club Challenge Night
Well done to all those who entered the challenge. All fenced really well and Chris will be aching for the next week or two. Proceeds will go towards buying more breeches for the club.
Chris went undefeated for over 20 matches and then was beaten by Bryan Lewis in the second to last match. Well done to Bryan for picking your moment well and breaking Chris's winning streak and thank you for donating your winnings back into the breeches fund.

Brixton LPJS Event - 4th December 2005

James Frewin continued his winning ways with a dominant performance in this event. Having won all his fights in the first round and gaining No 1 seed he got a bye through the Last 32, won his direct elimination fights 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 to reach the final. In the final (to 15 hits) he had a tougher time of it in the first period trailing 10-8, however after a tactical change he scored the next seven hits to take the title 15-10.

Chris Howser also had a number of his school fencers in the Under 11 event (32 entries) with Harrison Standish (Cottesmore) an excellent 3rd, Luke Puddy (Sandcross) 11th, Nicholas Ma Siy (Cottesmore) 15th and Jordan Standish (Cottesmore) 21st. Aleka Gurel (Cottesmore) won her first fight in the Under 13 event and showed that she also got great potential for the future. The Cottesmore pupils results are expecially impressive as they have only fenced at the school since September, with only 10 fencing sessions experience.

SE Regional Championships 6th November 2005

Fencers from Redhill and Reigate Epee Club narrowly missed completing a clean sweep of Epee Titles at the South East Region Championships last weekend.

In the Under 14 Girls Event Rebecca Thomas lead the run of success with a 100% win record to take the title in style. In the Under 16 Girls event Natasha Lewis-Oliver succeeded in beating a strong field including last year’s Under 14 National Champion, Sarah Milner to add the Regional crown to her Surrey title. In the Under 18 girls, the club missed, National Under 18 champion, Nicola Lydall who could not make the event due to Pentathlon commitments, however Charlotte Whitlock narrowly missed out on the title finishing 3rd in the event.

The club dominated the Boy’s events with James Frewin, Gareth Thomes and Aaron Gardner taking the Under 14, 16 and under18 titles respectively, sweeping opponents from Kent, Middlesex, Sussex and the rest of Surrey away in style. The three of them dominated their events to take the titles with great performances, generally only having difficulties when fencing team-mates from the club.

With the regional events counting as the qualifier for the British Youth Championships in January 2006 the club will be represented by a superb group of youth fencers at the National Championships yet again. Not only did the winners qualify, another four club fencers qualifying for the National Championships with the chance to lift another National Title for the club following Nicola’s success and coach, Chris Howser’s senior National Title in July.

Surrey Youth Championships 25th September 2005

Redhill & Reigate Epee Club, and the schools which Club Coaches, Chris Howser and Neale Thomas teach fencing at, are set to dominate Epee for many years to come locally following another great set of results at the Surrey Youth Championships. Chris and Neale coach 5 of the 8 winners of the Epee events who all fence with the club and they also had fencers in the top 3 of all the 8 Epee Events.

Winners included Jessica Ventham (also City of London Freemans School) Under 12 Girls Epee, Rebecca Thomas - Under 14 Girls Epee, Natasha Lewis-Oliver (City of London Freemans School) - Under 16 Girls Epee, Josh Snow - Boys Under 14 Epee and Jack Legon - Boys Under 16 Epee. Best placed fencers for the other events were, in the Under 12 Boys - Steven Pilley (City of London Freemans School) 2nd, Under 18 Boys –Aaron Gardner 2nd and Under 18 Girls Charlotte Whitlock in 3rd place.

The competition had over 160 entries and was arguably the strongest on record, especially in the younger age-groups. Fencers also entered from local state schools including Sandcross School, Reigate with Luke Puddy coming a creditable14th in the Boys Under 12 and Kirstin Walling in Girls Under 12 placing 8th from St Johns School Redhill.

With several more events taking place between now and Christmas times are busy for fencers locally and with all of these athletes reaching their late teens and early 20’s in 2012 these could well be the athletes we will be supporting in the London Olympic Games.

Pentathlon Nationals Report

17/18th July 2005

Pentathletes from the South-East region, most who are coached fencing by Redhill & Reigate Epee Club Coaches continued the clubs supurb run of National Championships results last weekend at the Pentathlon National Championships which were held at Millfield School, Somerset.

Pentathlon, which consists of 5 sports, namely, Show Jumping, Pistol Shooting, Fencing (Epee), Swimming and Running is one of the countries top Olympic events with a Gold and 2 Bronzes won at the Sydney and Athens games. Young competitors at this event could well be up for team places for London 2012 if they keep producing such good results.

In the Senior Ladies event club fencers Sarah Langridge and Emily Bright came 2nd and 3rd respectively to follow up the previous weekends team semi-final at the fencing National Championships. John Dorian came 2nd in the Youth ‘A’ Boys (Under 18) following solid results in all 5 events.

The first title for a club fencer was won by Nicola Lydall in the Youth ‘A’ Girls event following wins in both the shooting and riding. This backed up with 2nd in the fence shows that the skill events are so important to win at pentathlon. In addition to a national title in pentathlon, Nicola is also the Under 18 Fencing (Epee) National Champion.

Andrew Ghagan and Jack Legon finished 2nd and 3rd in the Youth ‘C’ Boys event, Jack with another year at this age-group will be favourite for next years championships if he keeps improving as he has been. Kate French showed her usual great performances all round whilst finishing runner-up in the Youth ‘C’ event (U14).

James Myatt took gold in the Youth ‘C’ Boys event following a win in the shoot and a solid 5th in the fence. James showed increasing confidence throughout the event and won ahead of athletes currently on national funding, which James must now deserve. Mark Inkester won both fence and run, however without a riding certificate was unable to compete in the ride. Next year Mark should be able to compete in the ride and everyone will be watching for a spectacular score if all goes to plan.

Annie French showed that it is not only her sister with the talent with a very encouraging runner-up place in the Youth ‘D’ Girls event winning the ride and fencing her heart out for 3rd in that event. In the youngest age-group youth ‘E’, Ross Bowers won for the south-east, being the only competitor to compete in all 5 events. Hugo Fleming placed 2nd whilst not riding, the odds were against him with Ross having scored 1160 in the ride, however by winning all the 4 events he competed in Hugo cut the deficit to 300 points and next year will be a force to be reckoned with in his age-group.

Fencing Nationals Report

10/11th July 2005

Chris Howser, who coaches fencing at a number of local schools, including Reigate Priory, Sandcross School and St John’s School, became National Champion at the Senior National Fencing Championships last Saturday.

With an entry of 159 which included all of the 20 top ranked Epee fencers in Great Britain, this is the best result Chris has achieved in 25 years of fencing. Chris won the final in a very tight 15-14 defeat of, Sussex House’s (London), Tristan Lane who is currently ranked 3rd in Great Britain and the result should help Chris jump up the rankings from his current 7th place.

The weekend was also extremely successfully generally for the Redhill and Reigate Epee club, based at the Royal Alexander & Albert School in Reigate, where Chris is the senior coach. Sarah Langridge achieved an excellent, though slightly unexpected 3rd place in the Ladies Epee Event, and Kate Gardner 6th in Ladies Foil would have been better had it not been for some controversial refereeing decisions.

R&REC also fielded teams in both the Mens and Ladies team event. Both teams far exceeded their expected results, surpassing last year’s quarter final result with 3rd places in both events. Teams comprised of Emily Bright, Sarah Langridge & Kate Gardner (Ladies Epee), Ben Measures, Neale Thomas & Chris Howser (Mens Epee).

Last weekend saw fencers from Redhill & Reigate Epee club competing at some of the last events before the, end of season, National Championships which are being held in a couple of weeks.

James Frewin competed at the Haverstock 11 and under championships, held in Islington, London. With 30 entries this turned out to be one of the biggest events, nationally, of the year for this age-group. James steamed through the early rounds with great style and technique without any losses. In the knock-out stages James again showed dominance over his opponents with the closest score in any match being 10-6 in the final. James is one of over a dozen fencers under 12 years old who train at the club and this group are showing great potential for the future.

At the Surrey One-Hit Epee Open event (with 33 entries), fencers who attend the club again performed admirably. In the Men’s event, Tim Buzwell won with a 26-6 win loss record, with Jes Smith runner-up 24-8 and Ben Measures =4th with 21-11. The Ladies Results were also excellent with Nicola Lydall winning with 22 wins and Rachel Measures 4th with 16 wins.

National Under 18 Championships and National Tetrathlon Championships

Juniors from Redhill & Reigate Epee Club have triumphed at National Championships two weekends running. At the British Youth Fencing Championships Nicola Lydall battled through the early rounds of the Girls under 18s Epee, to set up a quarter-final with Louise Highton, No 4 in the British under 20 rankings. In a close match Nicola won 15-13 to set up a semi-final with Sally Kemp from the South-West region. Nicola sped to a lead of 4 hits and several double hits later scored the final hit to reach the final with a 15-13 score. In the final Nicola, who is a Pentathlete and only has time to fence once a week, faced Rhiannon Lawrence also from the South-West, ranked No 2 in the Under 20s and 11th in the British senior rankings. Again Nicola started strongly, forcing her way to a lead of 4 hits. Trading points Nicola kept her lead through to the minute break, leading 14-10 after 3 minutes. With Rhiannon re-invigorated following the break, the lead was closed with Rhiannon scoring two single hits. Finally Nicola got her point on for a double and a 15-13 score-line to take her first National Fencing Title and the first national title for a R&REC fencer.

At last weekends National Tetrathlon Championships, which is comprises of pistol shooting, swimming, fencing & running, many fencers who attend R&REC competed at the event held at Bath University. In the Boys Youth C (Under 14) event, Mark Inkester won 3 of the 4 events, including the fence, to take the overall title, with Joshua Snow runner-up in the fence and overall. In the Girls Youth C, Kate French and Jenny Cusselle placed 1st and 2nd overall respectively, aided by strong fencing performances.
In the Youth B (U16) Boys event, Jack Legon, who has another year in the age-group, competed strongly to end up 2nd place overall, with Andrew Ghagan an excellent 3rd.
With John Dorian and Montana Jones both runner-up in the Youth A (U18) events for boys and girls respectively our older athletes competed excellently, Nicola Lydall, was 2nd going into the run, however sickness from the previous week caused her to pull out just before the half way point of the final eventb.
In the Juniors (U20), Helen Pinkess produced her best fence ever to record a 720 score in one of her weaker events and finally place 5th overall. This was a great result for Helen and shows great potential for the future.
Sarah Langridge felt her fence did not go well, however recorded a respectable 70% winning average and 1000 points to help her towards 2nd place overall. In the Men’s event, Chris Howser, fencing coach at R&REC and for the SE Region Pentathlon squad, competed at a Tetrathlon event for the first time in over 16 years and managed to record a personal best score in the shoot, a solid fence (70% wins, 1000 points) and his best ever 200 metre swim in a 50 metre pool. Unfortunately Chris has not trained for many years and the 3000m run was not his best event, eventually coming in last in the run, however with 5 athletes not completing the run, in the bitter cold, this ended up lifting Chris to 9th overall.

Surrey Epee Championships

13th Feb 2005

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club completed a near clean sweep of Epee titles at the Surrey Championships last Sunday. With the strongest entry for years, with 26 entries, of which at least 10 could easily have won the event, the Men’s Epee was a challenge with R&Rs, Ben Measures finally battling 15-14 past the highly experienced and 5 time former winner, Howard West of London Thames Club to reach the final. On the other side of the knock out, Chris Howser squeezed through, also with a 15-14 scoreline, past 1992 Commonwealth Medallist, Dudley Tredger from the Streatham Club in the Semi Final to set up an all R&REC Final. After setting out and getting an early 3 point lead, Chris traded points with Ben, eventually winning 15-13 after a very competitive match.

In the Ladies Event, R&R’s Rachel Measures and 16 year old Nicola Lydall both competed very strongly to reach the Semi Finals. With Rachel victorious in her semi, Nicola strove to join her, however Elaine Buzwell, fencing for Wimbledon, who also trains at R&REC, was not to be beaten, winning 15-12. In the final, Elaine, who has just been selected to fence for Scotland in the 5 Nations Championships next month, took an early advantage with her strong parries over the physically slighter Rachel and held the lead to take the title by a couple of hits.

The mixed team event started at 2pm with R&REC supplying 6 of the 14 teams including 2 all ladies teams. The ‘A’ team of Bryan Lewis, Ben Measures and Chris Howser successfully negotiated their first group stage winning both of their 2 matches clearly. The Club’s ‘B’ team of Vilya Harvey, Keith Rowles and Mark Myers narrowly failed to beat Streatham ‘B’, which included Dudley Tredger, so winning 2 of 3 matches. The ‘F’ team of Kate Gardner, Rachel Rowles and Rachel Measures also lost one match, against the strong Wimbledon squad, finally placing as the top all Ladies team.

With only 4 teams of the 14 promoted to the next round only undefeated teams made it through. In the semi’s R&REC ‘A’ team cut through the Streatham ‘B’ team to join Guildford in the Final. Following a close match throughout, Chris stepped out for the final, 3 minute match with a 37-35 advantage over Guildford’s, Neale Thomas who is a Commonwealth medallist for Wales. After 2 minutes and 41 seconds Neale clawed back to level the scores 40-40, but with time running out Chris scored a crucial hit to take the lead again. With only seconds to go, Neale had to go all out attack and Chris could finally take full advantage of his counter attacking style, getting two more hits to finish with a 43-40 lead and retain the team title at the end of the time period.

Essex Open

Another fencing season and another set of encouraging results for R&REC fencers. With 149 fencers in the Men's Event, Chris Howser came 10th, Henrik Gustavii 26th, Mark Myers 59th, Ben Measures 77th and Richard Defargo 93rd on his first Open Competition. This is probably the first event that the club has had 3 men gaining national ranking points at a single Competition.

In the Ladies, Rachel Measures had a storming first round to be seeded 6th out of an entry of 70, however met fellow club fencer and pentathlete Sarah Langridge as her first knock-out opponent and ended up 36th with Sarah 32nd. Rachel Rowles also made the top 50 coming 48th.

European Youth B Triathlon Championships

Nicola Lydall came 4th in the triathlon (run, swim, shoot) which is an excellent result and the best GB result. As a team the British girls won gold and a relay silver... Well Done!!

British Youth Pentathlon Championships

Another Pentathlon event and another set of impressive results in the fencing event for SE fencers, many who fence regularly at R&REC.

These are great results for all, especially with 4 fencers taking top positions out of the 5 events the SE entered athletes. Well done. Special mentions go to Nathalie George and Freddie Gover (both 2nd) who have both only fenced just over a year and have in this event both showed everyone that they can really produce the results that there potential was hinting at.

British National Championships

Last weekend Redhill & Reigate Epee Club fencers competed at the National Championships, held at RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton and came away with a number of great results.

The club has only existed for 18 months so it is impressive that it supplied the 3rd largest number of entries to the Epee events and the largest number by any club outside London.

In the Men’s Epee, Coach, Chris Howser battled through the rounds, including a win over the British Ranked No. 1 fencer to reach the final. This was somewhat unexpected as Chris has not actually trained for several seasons and this caught up with him as unfortunately he ran out of steam by the time of the final, losing 15-8 to Surrey team-mate and British Number 2, Tom Cadman, who has occasionally also attended R&REC.

Other R&REC results included Mark Myers 25th, Ben Measures 65th, Nathan Smithfied 143rd and Barnaby King 148th out of over 150 fencers. Nathan and Barnaby were competing in their first major event having only started fencing a few months earlier and caused much more experienced fencers a fair bit of trouble.

In the Ladies events, Coach, Kate Gardner, came a superb 7th in the Foil, showing a style and grace that is lacking in many lady foilists. In the Epee, a club squad made up almost entirely of junior fencers fenced far above their usual standard with Nicola Lydall coming 39th, Rachel Rowles 42nd, Julia Lydall 51st, Rose Fenton, 70th and Laura Dodd who has only recently completed a beginner course coming 76th.

In the team events on Sunday the Ladies team of Nicola Lydall, Rachel Rowles and Rachel Measures narrowly failed to beat eventual Champions, London Thames in the Quarter Finals to Finish 5th out of 12 teams. This was an amazing result as none of the team had ever fenced at this level before. In the Men’s Event, Chris Howser, Ben Measures and Bryan Lewis fought their way to also reach the Quarter Finals, losing to the London Thames ‘A’ team who fielded a team of fencers ranked 3rd, 11th and 16th on the national rankings. Kate Gardner joined up with Salle Boston to reach the final of the Ladies Foil, finally being defeated by a very strong Salle Paul team.

Overall this was an amazing set of results and with so many junior fencers at the club the future bodes well for fencing locally. British National Championships

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club again shows its position as one of the biggest clubs in the Country by supplying the 3rd largest number of entries to the National Championships (Epee events) only exceeded by London Clubs, LTFC and Haverstock. Considering a large proportion of the club's members are Under the 13 year old age minimum and the club only started in 2003 this is a great feat. In a couple of years the club should be nearing the top in terms of national entry levels and results the rate that it is improving currently. Good Luck to All.

Surrey One Hit Epee

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club and other fencers coached by Chris Howser and Kate Gardner supplied 12 of the 34 entries for the Surrey 1 hit event. With many of the R&REC entries having recently taken beginner courses the final results were excellent. Richard Defago cause upset after upset, including beating his coach Chris Howser to finish midway through the field even though he had only fenced for less than 6 months. Nathan, David, Laura and Barney all caused chaos through the day, beating many more experienced fencers and attracting great reviews from fencers/observers from other clubs. Rose (Under 14 agegroup still) narrowly missed out on 3rd place on the Ladies event, losing out to fellow, but older pentathlete, Helen Pinkess following a barrage (fight-off).

In the end Richard's win over Chris was the deciding factor in Chris finishing 2nd, one hit behind 7-time winner Howard West (who Chris beat in 5 seconds earlier in the day) from the London Thames Fencing Club. Well done to all those who took part and thanks to Surrey/SE Captain, Andy Reynolds, who organised the event.

Excaliber

Surrey won the Excaliber Trophy for the 7th year in a row to continue their reign as the strongest fencing county in Great Britain. Kate Gardner, Andy Reynolds (team captain) and Chris Howser competed in the two day event with Kate and Chris in the top three Individuals in their respective events.

European Youth Pentathlon Championships Mafra

Nicola Lydall completed a great competition with over 70% wins in the fence as a backbone to her 9th place in the individual event, with 2 years left in the Youth A age-group the future looks good for even better results in future. In the Team relay Nicola again completed a great fence to help the team to an overall silver medal.

The South-East Region won the Winton Cup yet again with Club Coach, Kate Gardner on the Team. The Winton cup is a National Event where regional teams compete in 3 man teams for each of the 6 Weapons to identify the strongest fencing region in the country.

Surrey Epee Report

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club took the individual and team titles at the Surrey Epee Championships, held at Epsom College last weekend. With the club only starting in February 2003, this was the first opportunity the club had to make its mark on the county scene and it did so in style.

In the individual event, Club Coach, Chris Howser stormed to victory beating last year’s champion Howard West in the semi-finals 15-6. Chris started the fight with 6 straight hits to his opponent’s wrist and then closed out the match in what could only be described as efficiently. In the final Chris’s opponent, Welsh International and Commonwealth medalist Neil Thomas of Guildford Club, put up more of a fight. After Chris built up a clear lead to go 14-7 up, Neil responded with 3 straight hits which caused a stir in the crowd before Chris finished off his opponent with a direct counter-attack to his opponent’s chest to take the title.

In the team event, the Redhill and Reigate Team started as third seeds and the team consisted of, former international pentathlete, Ben Measure, Bryan Lewis who represented Great Britain and England as a fencing international in the 1970’s and Chris Howser. Following clear first round wins over Streatham C and Wimbledon, Redhill and Reigate met Guildford. The Guildford team had started the event as second seeds, following a close start Redhill and Reigate pulled away following spirited battling by Ben and very accurate hits from Bryan and Chris carried on with a bit lesss energy than earlier in the day to finish off the match.

In the final Redhill and Reigate were pitched against London Thames Fencing Club, who had won the event in 2002 and 2003 and have won the National Team Title in recent years. Again the match started closely with only a few hits deviding the teams. Going into the final match, Ben and Bryan had given Chris a 4 hit lead to defend at 39-35. The opponent, Turkish International, Alp Orge is an unortadox fencer who regularily surprises opponents with hits others would not contemplate. Chris had 2 minutes to ensure that the lead was not lost, eventually with a few seconds to go Alp’s last gasp attempts to close the gap were unsuccesfull and the score at final time was 44-40 to Redhill and Reigate Epee Club.

With the club winning the event in its first year of existance, it has set a target for new club in the future, as it is a feat that has not occurred in the last 30 years. The clubs other team ‘Redhill & Reigate Epee Club Juniors’ fenced supurbly, Natasha Lewis-Oliver, Rose Fenton and Charles Barker all under 14 fencers were the youngest in the event by a good few years and held there own well, causing grief to many of their opponents. The experienced gained from fencing senior events will help them hone their skills for the future, the rest of Surrey and the country should watch their backs as the club’s younger members are on a mission and they have the talent to do great things in the future.

Club coach Kate Gardner travelled to Belfast for the Northern Ireland Open and annialated the opposition winning the ladies foil final 15-3 to follow up other wins this year at the Sussex and Derry Opens.

Coaches show how it should be done!

Coaches from Redhill and Reigate Epee Club and Clapham’s 126 Club, took three of the four Titles at last weekend’s Sussex Open Fencing Tournament, which was held just outside Brighton, at the Portslade Leisure Centre.

Chris Howser (Redhill and Reigate Epee Club’s Senior Coach) won the Men’s Epee event with a 15-11 final victory over London Thames Fencing Club’s, Matthew Dodwell on Saturday. The event that included two fencers ranked in the British top 10, Simon Austin (8th) and Philippe Barbasiewicz (5th) had 70 fencers competing for the title. This is now Chris’s 3rd Open Event Title in 2003 and bodes well for the rest of the season.

Jo Maynard, British Number 3 and Coach of the 126 Club, who has Chris as one of her Coaches in turn, won the Ladies Epee title with a victory in the final over Cathrine Gamblin of, North London’s, Haverstock Club. Jo, who has taken over Coaching Epee at Westminster School from Chris since he returned to full time work in the city, showed great skill is dispatching Gamblin who is 6th on the British Rankings.

In the Ladies Foil event, on Saturday, Redhill and Reigate’s other Coach, Kate Gardner, swept away the opposition with a fluent and impressive demolition of, Morley Blades Club’s, Dawn Townsend 15-2 in the final. This followed a 15-3 victory over Salle Boston’s, Lucy Orhinal in the semi-finals. In a competition where Kate showed her true class, she only conceded 3 hits whilst racking up 30 hits in the first round of the day. As the competition proceeded, 15-7 was her closest direct elimination match all day.

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club fencer Georgina Usher continued her great start to the season with a win at the Bristol Open out of a field of 82. Georgina has now had three wins in a row by winning the National Championship, Essex Open and Bristol Open titles since July. With this great streak Georgina should also regain her British Number 1 ranking.

Kate Gardner, who coaches at the club, also had a great result, reaching the quarter-final of the Ladies Foil out of a field of 56.

Redhill and Reigate Epee Club has been running for less than a year and currently has fencers attending aged from 8 to 60+. Attendances for the last few weeks have been in excess of twenty. This makes the club one of the biggest Epee Clubs in the South East of England.

07/09/2003:

On the first weekend of the new fencing season, Redhill and Reigate Epee Club members came away from the Essex Open, held in Colchester, with a win and a number of other impressive results. Georgina Usher, the current British National Champion won the Ladies Epee Event to continue her domination of the weapon. Rachel Rowels also had a great result reaching the top 32 in this Open Event which will boost her Junior (U20) ranking.

With club coach Chris Howser struck down with flu, it was left to Tom Cadman 3rd, Alastair Gerrard 9th, Tristan Lane 10th, Dudley Dredger 23rd and Mark Myers 58th, all recent fencers at the club, to compete in the Men’s Epee event which had over 130 entries. Mark’s result is especially impressive, as he has only been fencing for one year and should jump up about 70 places on the National Rankings from his current 190th place.

With the Bristol, Leicester and Sussex Opens in the next six weeks, club fencers are going to be very busy indeed. In addition to fencing events, we also have a number of Modern Pentathletes, who will be competing in October at the Sealions Pentathlon, in Kent, who are now back in full training.

The last two weeks have seen a quality of fencing at the club, previously unseen. The list of fencers attending include Tristan Lane (National Mens Epee Champion), Georgina Usher (National Ladies Epee Champion), Tom Cadman (Current British No. 4, former No. 1), Dudley Tredger (Former British No. 2) as well as Coaches, Chris Howser (Former British No 1), Steve Paul (Former British No. 1) and Kate Gardner (Current British No. 4 (Foil)).

We have also welcomed a new group of fencers who will be completing their beginner course this Saturday and have now started coming to the Tuesday sessions.

Congratulations to a number of Redhill and Reigate Epee Club fencers at their various National Championships.

At the Senior National Fencing Championships at RAF Cosford on the 12th July, Georgina Usher won the Ladies National Epee to continue her dominance in the Ladies Epee event. In the Men's Epee Tristan Lane won the title and Alistair Gerrard was runner-up in the youngest final for a decade.

At the National Age Group Pentathlon Championships held at Millfield School on the weekend of the 17th/18th July, Freddie Gover, in his first National Pentathlon Championship, won the D age-group fence with Max Crawley-Moore coming a close second. Congratulations are also extended to Georgina Wood and Nathalie George for great performances in their first national events.
